xx Coupling banned in the US!!
« Thread started on: Sep 24th, 2003, 06:43am »

Well, not all of the US. But there's an article on the BBC website at the moment that says that some tv channels are not showing it because the content was "unsuitable".

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3131516.stm

US TV shies away from racy sitcom

The UK version of Coupling has become a cult hit
The US version of BBC sitcom Coupling has been banned by two local stations because of its sexual content.
The stations - WNDU in South Bend, Indiana and KSL in Salt Lake City, Utah - are affiliated to national network NBC, which made the show.

NBC has remade the cult hit British comedy, about six friends, with the first episode to be shown on Thursday.

WNDU said the sexual jokes "push the envelope well beyond the boundaries of our community's standards".

The station's managers said they were "disappointed and uncomfortable" with the content.

NBC has admitted the show is "provocative" - but said the show was appropriate for national broadcast.

New ground

The original BBC version has become known for its uninhibited look at the young and liberated city dwellers and their sex lives - or lack of them.

"This is more about people not having sex," writer Steven Moffat said.

The formula for the NBC version has been changed little from the British original - and some people have touted it as a possible successor to Friends.

It does cover new ground for a mainstream US network, Ben Silverman, an executive producer of the NBC show, said.

"I think it's ground that [has] been covered on cable but I think we are trying to make it as provocative as we can within intelligent boundaries," he said.

"We absolutely want people to go 'wow' a little bit, but only in an adult, sophisticated way."

I'm an American, and the British "Coupling" is my absolute favorite show. I just watched the season premiere of the U.S. version of "Coupling" and it was terrible.

It's hard to believe the contrast, considering the lines are the same. But there's something about the sharp British wit that makes a world of difference. The clever British comic delivery, "coupled" with timing, puts the American "Coupling" to shame!

I agree that the content is not even close to the BCC version and it sucks! I have heard racier themes on Soap Operas and other shows on the WB here in the US. This is the problem with the US, people can't deal with reality not even if it is coming across as comedy. This place sucks!! And thanks to George Bush, it will be hell soon for anyone that isn't WASP, heterosexual and rich.

Not only does the american version suck, but the lines were way different. I mean, how many americans do you know say "I Begged" after they say a sentance or "Show your breast?"
Susan should have said "Show my breast," in her attempts to get rid of Jeff. The reality is, the BBC version of Coupling tops any and I mean any American comedy. I'm an american myself and I love British comedy. Oh and when they air the 2nd episode next week, they better have Jeff talk about the "Sock Gap" or I'm gonna be really ticked off.

Those channels that coupling was banned on must really suck. The Salt Lake City one is a mormon station, so they definitly don't want coupling there, and the other one is either a fluke, or really in the middle of nowhere. People are so freakin politically correct here it makes me sick.

The two stations, out of over 200 NBC affiliated stations, that didn't run the US version are both owned by religious organizations. WNDU is owned by Notre Dame (a Catholic University), and KSL is owned and opperated by the Mormon Church. Independent stations in both markets picked up the show, so neither city was spared from what ended up being a very horribly wasted half hour. I couldn't believe how bad it actually was, even though I expected as much. If it had been better, I thought I'd go see a taping here in Burbank. They couldn't pay me to attend now.
Thank God the UK series 3 DVD showed up in the mail this weekend, the nightmare of last Thursday night has lessened a bit wink

Is it possible to get the UK Series in the NTFS Format or must we buy another DVD player and keep it on PAL Format? I have seen the advertisements for the DVDs but we are still waiting for the second season here in the US. I have only seen them via AVI.

The show is on BBC America, as well as PBS (you have to check your local listings).

But, if you mean season DVD wise.. Season 1 & 2 are out in the US..

Season 3 is out in the UK. The US probably won't get Season 3 until next year... (just a guess).

Since we don't have cable.. we broke down and bought a region free player.. so now I can watch season 3!

the reason why the nbc version failed was the cast i mean rena sofer as susan!!! for god sakes susan is a blonde role not a black hair role!!!! and rena sofer is a death ax for any tv role!!!!they should have imported the episodes and aired them or brought the cast over. sad

Wow...The US version was really bad... I'm talking terrible...

The woman who played Susan should have played Sally and vice versa.

The guy who played Steve looked like PATRICK! And the guy who played Jeff... I don't even want to talk about him... :\

NBC had some good intentions, but when I first saw the commercial for US Coupling... I thought of another Red Dwarf USA flop.

The should just air the origional... Instead of PBS. PBS is blurry on my telly. tongue

Never make an American remake of ANYTHING! I am terrified to see the American theatrical debut of a live action Neon Genesis Evangelion (origionally an anime).

Oy... When will they learn... :\

American Coupling sucked big time. I watched it because I love Coupling perisod and I would do anything to help Steve Moffatt out. I'm glad it got cancelled and they brought it back to the UK where they know how to put the laughter back in the show. The US also got rights to The Office. The office is hillarious. I wonder when that disaster will be released.

Coupling is the best show I've seen, along with Seinfeld. (maybe because it's a carbon copy of Seinfeld... smiley
At least the writer and cast aren't denying it.

I'm not quit sure which version of Coupling I've seen. I'm seen season 1,2, and 3 on DVD and I've seen the show on TV. It comes on Fri nights at 11pm on PBS, but at re-runs of the shows I've seen on DVD. Is the British version the shows seen on the DVD's?
